Release from the Campaign: The September 1st Cut-off

Published on
September 1, 2020

September 1st, 2020

TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC

[FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE]

RE: Release from the Campaign ofAndrew West Regarding the September 1st Cut-off

Ottawa, ON – The campaign for Andrew West is excited to announce that we have met the requirements needed by the Green Party to remain an official leadership contestant and be on the ballot comeSeptember 26th.

This is very exciting; we at the campaign are happy to know that our message of a moderate, inclusive, and relevant Green Party is striking chords across the nation, with both members and non-members alike. We will be continuing this message all the way to the election and beyond.

TheGreen Party has always been the voice of reason, logic and fact throughoutCanadian politics. We need to continue this messaging to achieve success, rather than move the party away from the views and values of most Canadians.Let's rally behind the big tent and moderate stance the Green Party has held for much of its history, and let's win more seats and form government!

Thank you.

Sincerely,

A Letter from Andrew West

Published on
August 22, 2020

AUGUST 22nd, 2020

A Letter from Andrew

I had to delay this campaign. In December of 2019, I was asked by the Green Party of Ontario to be a candidate in the upcoming by-election in the Ottawa-area riding of Orléans. Though the leadership of our federal party was in my sights, I put those aspirations on hold to represent the party provincially in a riding which many saw as un-winnable. While this pause has put me at a disadvantage both in exposure and fundraising when compared to some of my fellow candidates, I do not regret my decision one bit.

My race in Orléans proved to me two things. The first was that there is a thirst for real change; Canadians are tired of the endless string of broken promises of the Liberals and the Conservatives and, when presented with a like able candidate and a sensible platform, voters will put aside their dispositions of fear voting and elect a Green candidate that will fight for them. This was evident in the fact that I was able to raise the Green vote in Orléans by 134% compared to the 2018 provincial election.

The second, and perhaps even more importantly, was that we have so many great people within our party. From my volunteers to my campaign staffers to the members I would meet at the doors, I was always astounded by the people I met.It was this race that, while I was not victorious in Orléans, I was reinvigorated and driven to provide Greens with the responsible and electable leadership they want and need. This has continued since February with every meet and greet, roundtable, debate, and phone call I do.

I entered this race because Canada is at a decisive point in our history. With the world on the edge of catastrophe and a pandemic we must overcome, the ability for the Canadian Green Party to not only be the voice of reason but also a viable option at the polls is more needed than ever. We have been seen as a fringe, single-issue party since nearly our conception and if we continue to veer too far towards a single side of the political spectrum, we will never be able to lose this label. Should we wish to replicate the electoral success of the Liberal’s, Conservatives, NDP, or even the Bloc Québécois, we must showCanadians the breadth of our expertise and knowledge and platform. While we are the only party with the gumption to enact meaningful climate action in this time of crisis, we also know how to run an economy, execute no-nonsense foreign policy, and support our communities and citizens.

All of the candidates running for the leadership of the GPC present their own takes to the everyday problems we face in a way which is beneficial, however I feel that I am the only candidate who will not sacrifice Green values and present the public with a Party that will properly defend Canada and Canadians while also being a leader on the world stage; I will present the public with an electable Green government.

In the time of COVID-19 and so much uncertainty, Canadian Greens face an important choice which will decide if Canada has a viable, environmentally friendly option at the next federal election, or if our label as a fringe will continue to divide and, ultimately, destroy Canada.
I hope you will join me in forging a new Green Party which will bring us to the government’s side of Parliament Hill’s benches.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Andrew West

Media Release from the Campaign of Andrew West

To Whom It May Concern:

[FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE]

RE: Media Release from the Campaign of Andrew West

Owen Sound, ON – With less than a month left until the monetary and nomination deadline of September 1st, Andrew West’s campaign to lead the Green Party of Canada is in full swing. Voting for the new leader takes place between September 26th and October 3rd.

Andrew is an Ottawa-based lawyer and four-time Green Party candidate in the Ottawa area. Completing his undergraduate honours degree in Politics and Governance at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, and then specializing in environmental law at Fauteux Hall (University of Ottawa), Andrew has always been driven towards responsible leadership and environmental protection. Having served as the CEO of the Ottawa-Centre Riding Association, a candidate in four different elections at both the provincial and federal levels, as well as partaking in various fundraisers and other activities with the Green Party, Andrew understands the true meaning of ‘grassroots’ politics when it comes to Canadian Greens. His hands-on experience with the party gives him the best insight to lead the party and to win more seats. Andrew understands the need to provide better support for our members and candidates in all 338 ridings.

Andrew is a moderate. He fully supports social justice initiatives and knows that the best way to reduce poverty and crime is by investing in our communities. He also recognizes that to remain a strong nation, we must have a strong economy. Both of these, plus a robust plan to address the climate crisis, are not mutually exclusive and can be achieved by the right government – a West-led Green government. By remaining firm in our aspirations for a fair and just Canada and world while also attempting to balance the budget and achieving a strong, green, Canadian economy, we can create a sustainable Canada for us, our kids, and our grandkids to all enjoy.
